California Water Service to Begin Main Installation Project in San Mateo County

MENLO PARK, Calif. — California Water Service (Cal Water) announced today that it will begin the first phase of an infrastructure improvement project in the towns of Portola Valley and Woodside with the installation of approximately two miles of water main. The project, which starts Monday, will increase water system reliability for customers in the company's Bear Gulch District.

New 16-inch and 20-inch ductile iron water mains will be installed on Portola Road, from Sand Hill Road to Old La Honda Road and from Tadin Lane to Stonegate Road, and will connect to a modernized pump station. The original water main that served the area was installed under the multi-use trail along Portola Road more than 60 years ago and has begun to deteriorate. The main will be relocated to prevent future trail shutdowns; the new location was also selected to have less of an impact on the environment.

Construction will occur between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and some traffic delays or detours may occur. The water main installation portion of the project is expected to be completed in May. The second phase of the project includes the reconstruction of the existing booster pumping station and associated facilities as well as the demolition of an out-dated station is also expected to be completed in May, with landscaping to be established in Fall 2016.

"This important water system upgrade will ensure that we have a reliable supply of high-quality water to meet the community's needs at all times," said Cal Water District Manager Dawn Smithson. "We will work to minimize any traffic impacts and repave the road to ensure the streets are left in good condition when the project is complete."

Cal Water serves about 57,500 people through 18,800 service connections in Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside, and Menlo Park. The company has provided water service in the area since 1936. Additional information may be obtained online at www.calwater.com.
