Community Park Benefits From Recycled Water Project

Westlake Village, Calif.—California Water Service (Cal Water) began the installation of a new recycled water line for Triunfo Park this week in its Westlake District. The main, which will stretch from Westlake Boulevard West to Tamarack Street on Triunfo Canyon Road, will provide a cost-effective and drought-proof solution to meet State water-use reduction targets, while conserving potable water for the community and creating a renewable resource for the park.

About 2,200 feet of 6-inch recycled water main will be installed to provide recycled water to Triunfo Park by linking it to the existing recycled water main serving Lake Sherwood. This will dramatically reduce the amount of potable water used to irrigate the park. About 9.75 million gallons of potable water had previously been utilized from the State Water Project each year to water the park, according to Westlake District Manager Doug Varney. That's nearly enough to fill 15 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Converting Triunfo Park to recycled water use will help the Westlake District comply with SBx7-7, which was signed into law in November 2009. Also known as 20x2020, this policy amended the State Water Code to require a 20% reduction in urban per capita water use by the year 2020.

"This is a worthy investment for the community because the recycled water is a renewable resource, and using it frees up millions of gallons of potable water each year that can instead be used for public consumption," Varney said. "Using recycled water for the park's irrigation is a fiscally responsible solution, too, as recycled water costs 20 percent less than potable water."

This is the second park this year that Cal Water has converted to a recycled water irrigation system. Earlier in 2016, Cal Water installed recycled water main in the 12-acre North Ranch Neighborhood Park at the southwest corner of Kanan and Upper Ranch Road. Both parks are in the Conejo Valley Recreation Park District.

Cal Water serves about 7,100 service connections in Westlake and about 2 million people through 480,300 service connections in California. The company, which has provided water service in the area since 1983 was ranked "Highest in Customer Satisfaction among Water Utilities in the West" in 2016 by J.D.
