Cal Water Adds Two Wells to Bakersfield District, Increasing Water Supply Reliability for Customers
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—California Water Service (Cal Water) completed two important water infrastructure projects in Bakersfield this spring that improves water supply reliability for existing and future customers plus fire protection for first responders. The first upgrade included rehabilitating and bringing an existing well back into service, while crews also installed a new well to help meet the growing needs of the community.
The existing well, located on Brisbane Avenue, was initially constructed in 1992 but was taken offline in 2006 due to increasingly stringent water quality regulations. With the installation of new treatment equipment, Cal Water can provide up to 1.6 million gallons of clean, safe water to customers each day.
The new well, housed at 3401 Hughes Lane, is the first one constructed in the district in 10 years. Located about 1,000 feet underground, the well can produce up to 1,500 gallons of water per minute.
"Both of these wells will serve the Bakersfield area for decades to come and are an important part of our long-term plan to ensure that our customers have a reliable supply of high-quality water and firefighters have the water they need to protect our community," Cal Water District Manager Mike Mares said. "We were especially pleased to be able to bring the older well back into service, as utilizing existing water infrastructure reduces both costs and temporary inconveniences that customers may experience with construction. These are just part of our commitment since we started in 1926 to provide quality, service, and value to the community."
Cal Water serves approximately 280,400 people through 71,600 service connections in its system and another 145,900 people through an operations and maintenance contract with the City of Bakersfield. Company-wide, Cal Water serves 2 million people through 484,900 service connections in California. The utility has provided water service in the area since 1926.
