Cal Water Completes Water Main Replacement Project to Support Customers in Chico's Vecino Neighborhood
CHICO, Calif. — California Water Service (Cal Water) has completed a water infrastructure upgrade in the Chico Vecino neighborhood that will strengthen water system reliability and infrastructure resiliency for customers' everyday needs and firefighters' emergency needs.
The project, which began in early January and was completed earlier this week, included the installation of 2,466 feet of new 6-inch PVC water main to replace aging main originally installed in the 1930s and 1940s. Crews also installed 33 new individual customer service connections and one new fire hydrant on Spruce Avenue, which will enhance fire protection in the area. Installation took place on East 2nd Avenue, from Palm Avenue to near Laburnum Avenue, and on Spruce Avenue, from East 1st Avenue to East 3rd Avenue, in addition to several adjacent alleys.
"The installation of new water main and service connections will enable us to continue to deliver a reliable supply of safe, high-quality drinking water to our customers while also helping first responders protect our community in an emergency," said District Manager George Barber. "Proactive upgrades such as this are part of our promise to deliver quality, service, and value to our Chico Vecino customers, and we thank residents for their patience during this important water system improvement project."
During construction, crews needed to remove a portion of sidewalk, one piece of which contained a concrete stamp showing the street name. "Being well aware of the value of this stamp to the neighborhood, we made it a priority to not only replace the sidewalk but also find a similar concrete stamp, so we could ensure the legacy of this neighborhood continues," Barber said. "It's the least we could do to thank our neighbors for their patience and understanding while we worked to upgrade the water system."
Cal Water serves about 106,400 people through 30,100 service connections in Chico and Hamilton City. Company-wide, Cal Water serves about two million people through 486,900 service connections in California. The utility has provided water service in the area since 1926.
