Water Infrastructure Improvement Project Begins in Atherton
MENLO PARK, Calif. — California Water Service (Cal Water) has started a water infrastructure upgrade in the Lloyden Park neighborhood of Atherton that will strengthen water system reliability and infrastructure resiliency for customers' everyday needs, plus enhance fire protection in the area for first responders to protect the community.
The project, which is expected to take approximately six weeks, includes the installation of 3,800 feet of 8-inch PVC water main and 51 2-inch individual water services. Crews will also install nine new fire hydrants. Installation will take place on Rittenhouse Avenue, Belleau Avenue, and Lloyden Drive, between Belleau Avenue and Rittenhouse Avenue.
"Proactive investments in the water system such as this water main replacement project will benefit the Atherton community for years to come, as they protect against leaks and ensure we can continue to deliver a reliable supply of safe, high-quality drinking water and sufficient resources for firefighters to protect our neighborhoods when they need it," said District Manager Dawn Smithson. "Strategic upgrades to our water infrastructure are an essential part of fulfilling our promise to deliver quality, service, and value to Atherton residents and businesses."
Crews will make every effort to minimize traffic delays during construction, which will occur Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. After construction is completed, crews will conduct water quality testing and connect individual service lines to the new water main. Crews will also restore the asphalt and concrete impacted by the construction.
Following installation of the new water main, crews must temporarily interrupt water service for one to two hours while individual services are connected to the new water main and put into service. Crews will also notify residents in advance of any planned shutdowns, which are normally scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Cal Water serves approximately 60,900 people through 18,900 service connections in Portola Valley, Woodside, Atherton, and portions of Menlo Park, Redwood City, and San Mateo County and about 2 million people through 486,900 service connections in California.
